Shoveling Snow Safely

Shoveling Snow Safely

low back pain

Well, we have already had to dust off our shovels in Evergreen this year but here are a few tips to save your back this winter:

  1. Hire your neighbor kid to shovel your walk for you! Your back will be happier and they will too with the extra cash! A snow blower or a plow service is a good option as well.
  2. Take it easy... we are less active in the winter so warm-up and stretch out first and take frequent breaks!
  3. ALWAYS bend with your knees and lift with your legs, not your back, when you pick up a heavy shovel of snow!
  4. Clear snow often, freshly fallen snow is much lighter.
  5. PUSH snow out of the way, it is much easier on your body than lifting and throwing.
  6. Throw snow FORWARD, not side to side.
  7. Hold shovel so your arms are bent and work with your arms and legs, not your back.
  8. Try to not bend over too much!
  9. Make friends with your snow plow guy.... bring him hot chocolate and cookies and he may not leave an icy rift in front of your driveway!

BUT if you do hurt your back while shoveling snow, come on in and see GET MOVING CHIROPRACTIC as soon as possible so the problem does not "snowball" and get worse! We will "get you moving again!"
